About Athens Airport

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is the largest and busiest airport in Greece, serving as the primary gateway to Athens and the surrounding Attica region. Located approximately 20 km (12 miles) east of the city centre, in the suburb of Spata, the airport plays a vital role in connecting Greece with the rest of the world.

Opened on 28 March 2001 to replace the old Ellinikon Airport, AIA was developed ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympics and has since become a major aviation hub in southeastern Europe. It is the main base for Aegean Airlines and Sky Express and supports a range of international and low-cost carriers flying to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Athens Airport handles over 25 million passengers annually and is a member of Group 1 of Airports Council International (airports with more than 25 million passengers per year). As of 2024, it ranks as the 16th-busiest airport in Europe and the second busiest in the Balkans, following Istanbul Airport.

The airport spans an impressive 16,000 acres (64.7 km²), making it one of the largest airports in Europe in terms of land area. It features a main terminal and a satellite terminal, both offering efficient passenger services, streamlined check-in and security and a wide selection of shops, restaurants and lounges.

Excellent transport links make Athens Airport easy to reach from the city centre and beyond. The airport is directly connected via Metro Line 3, suburban railway (Proastiakos), express buses and major road networks, offering fast and reliable access for both local and international travellers.
