The airport. Two words that can instil dread in many a traveller’s mind. The last thing you want before you go on a relaxing holiday or take a business trip is to feel stressed at the airport, so here's our tips for an easy experience.
1. Avoid rush hour
If you can, try to fly at a quieter time. The airport will feel less manic, and you'll be able to relax sooner as a result. Weekends and early mornings will always be the busiest, so avoid these if you can.
2. Book your airport parking in advance
Arriving at the airport without a booked parking space can be a very stressful encounter – not only spending time searching for a spot, but it can be very expensive. Plan your airport parking in advance, and you'll have a hassle-free experience at a car park you've chosen yourself. On the
ParkCloud website compare prices, features, and customer reviews in our global network of car parks and simply choose the best product for you. Oh, and once you have parked, don't forget to make a note of where you parked for when you get back.
3. There's an app for that
Most airlines have an app which you can use to find out information about your flight, download your boarding pass and check-in. For example, on the Vueling Airlines
app, you can do everything from book an airport lounge to change your flight. Forget flustering with printing things out - just use your phone/tablet for your boarding pass. If you're worried about internet connection, screenshot your boarding pass from the app.
4. Don't break the bank
Changing money at the airport can be more expensive, so be sure to do it before you leave. Plus, if it's already done, you won't need to spend the time before your flight worrying about changing your money.
5. Mark your luggage
This might sound obvious, but be sure to know what your suitcase looks like - perhaps even put a sticker or ribbon on it in case it's similar to someone else's. A member of the ParkCloud team once took a suitcase all the way from Gatwick to Dorset before getting a phone call to say they'd taken the wrong bag... Awkward.
6. Don't dress to impress
Going through security can be a pain – taking off your shoes, belt, jewellery etc. Little things will make this process a lot easier, for example wearing shoes that are easy to get off and on.
7. Fly local
Avoiding the big hubs could save you time and effort travelling there, so try to fly local – major airlines still offer the deals but regional airports can be much quieter.
8. Walk this way
If you've never been to the airport in question before, make sure to do a bit of research about how big it is. It could be a five minute walk to your gate, it could be 20. For example,
Madrid Barajas Airport can involve a long walk to your gate, so ensure you leave enough time. Plus, it's always a good idea to find out what food and drink is on offer and where, so you don't end up missing your favourite food spots.
9. Honesty is the best policy
If you're running late and arrive to a huge queue at security, let staff know you're late. They'll help make sure you get through speedily and don't miss your flight. Phew.
