Since the separation of Shannon airport from the Dublin Airport Authority one New Year’s Eve 2012, the airport has seen a steady increase in passenger numbers. This July passenger number reached 178,000, a 9% increase from July last year. The Labour councillor Joe Leddin, who campaigned for the freeing of Shannon Airport, says that all those who had campaigned for the separation of the airport from the airport are now being vindicated.
Cllr Leddin sees the separation of Shannon airport from DAA as one of the key factors in the rise in the number of passengers. A new team of board members has gone a long way in reviving the airport. Shannon airport has since gaining its independence seen an increase in routes to the USA, UK and across Europe in general. But, the increase in passenger numbers isn’t just a good thing for airport itself.
The hotels in the Limerick are also seeing a positive increase in number of guests. The hotels have benefitted from an increasing amount of American tourists in the area and have done better than they expected this summer.
