5 Top Tips Fearful Flyers Cannot Live Without

Love to see what the world has to offer? Can't stop thinking about hopping on your next long haul flight abroad? Sadly there are people who enjoy seeing new countries, but are wracked with stress at the thought of flying.

Although there are many other forms of transport considered more dangerous than flight, there are still lots of people anxious about the thought of taking to the sky.

If you find yourself plagued with worry during a flight, then read on...

  • Expect some movement on board
  • Treat turbulence as if it was 'bumps in the road'. Allow yourself to sway in motion with the aircraft. Resist the temptation to fight it, it will only make things worse. Take a seat at the front of the plane - turbulence is considered greater toward the back of the aircraft.

  • Keep distracted
  • Read your favourite book, enjoy an in-flight movie, chat with a friend or even a stranger, to shift your focus away from the fear. Dwelling on it will only stress you out further.

  • Avoid caffeine and energy drinks
  • Drinking lots of coffee and energy drinks on board will only heighten anxiety. Staying cool is key, so have a listen to some calming music to keep everything under control.

  • Know how safe airplanes are
  • Comparing the safety of travelling by aircraft to other dangers should alleviate your fear. Study how a plane works from take off to landing if you can. A little knowledge on the subject should help.

  • Take classes
  • There are plenty of classes around to help you manage your fear of flying. Some are free, others you will have to pay for. If classes fail to work out, then you may want to consider hypnosis as a last resort.
