Ireland West Knock Airport unveiled it's Winter 2012/2013 schedule recently, revealing an impressive 15,000 weekly seats to the UK and Spain.
The airport is following up a surprisingly successful summer season during which, despite the poor economic climate, the number of passengers passing through the airport reached record numbers surpassing 530,000. New flights to and from mainland Europe established for the season brought an estimate 14,000 new passengers to the airport, and around €7m to the local economy. The new routes, operated by major airlines Lufthansa and Ryanair, included destinations to Germany, Spain, France and Italy.
This winters biggest market is the Ireland-UK one, with 9 destinations in the UK being served. Low fares are been made a priority by the airlines running the services: Aer Lingus Aer Lingus Regional, Flybe and Ryanair. New services include a daily flight to Birmingham airport; routes to Edinburgh, Manchester, London Gatwick, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, London Luton and London Stansted. Lanzarote, in Spain, also has a big slice of the market and will have a weekly flight, every Thursday, from Knock airport, run by Ryanair.
Joe Gilmore, managing director of Ireland West Knock Airport, stated "We are delighted to be maintaining and growing our extensive network of UK and European destinations for the coming winter season despite the difficult economic climate in both the UK and Ireland. Our airline partners Aer Lingus, Aer LIngus Regional, Flybe and Ryanair recognise the demand that exists in this region for air services to the UK and Europe and we thank our loyal customers who use us from the likes of Mayo, Galway, Donegal and counties in our extended catchment such as Tipperary and Westmeath and many more who continue to support the airport and we will continue to strive to maintain essential air access and add additional services to popular European destinations in the future".
