5 Ways To Combat Jet Lag

Even though it's only quarter of the way through 2015, we bet that if you love to roam the globe, you will have already booked that holiday that keeps you going for the rest of the year.

However, we don't think you'll be looking forward to that nasty long haul flight it takes to get there and the inevitable jet lag that follows…

'Jet lag' occurs after experiencing a long aircraft journey. It alters your body clock to try and adjust to the new time zones, but this makes you feel drowsy and lethargic and tends not to be too pleasant.

Due to jet lag being such an issue for long haul travellers, British Airways have decided to put together a Jet Lag advisor in an attempt to combat the problem.

Regrettably it is difficult to fend off jet lag entirely, but there are preventative measures that you can apply to lessen the effects. Stick to these 5 golden rules and you won't go wrong.

  • Establish A New Daily Routine. Embrace the new. Adjust your eating and sleeping habits to those of your destination rather than those you carry out at home.
  • Plan A Stopover. Stopovers could help your body adjust to the new time zone slowly, rather than giving it a sudden shock. It might stop the journey there from being so monotonous as well.
  • Have A Drink. Staying hydrated before and during your flight will help lessen the effects of jet lag, but be sure to lay off the alcohol.
  • Medicate Wisely. It is not advised to take sleeping tablets, as your body wont adjust naturally to new sleeping patterns.
  • Keep Calm And Carry On. Try to reduce your stress levels, as stress makes jet lag worse. So the little things like pre-booking parking in advance and checking in online will help keep stress levels down.
