5 Top Tips Fearful Flyers Cannot Live Without

Enjoy seeing the world? Looking forward to hopping on your next long haul flight to see another exotic locale abroad? Sadly for some, boarding a flight does not come so easy.

Although there are many other forms of transporation considered more dangerous than flying, there still remains a high number of people petrified about the thought of taking to the sky.

  • Expect movement as you fly
  • Treat pockets of turbulence as if they were 'bumps in the road'. Allow your body to move in motion with the plane, don't fight it. Request a seat at the front of the plane as turbulence is believed to be greater towards the back of the aircraft.

  • Keep distracted
  • Read a book, enjoy an in-flight movie, speak to a friend or even a stranger, to shift your focus away from the fear. Concentrating on it will only make things worse.

  • Avoid caffeine and energy drinks
  • Slurping coffee and energy drinks on board will only heighten anxiety. Staying relaxed is paramount, so try listening to peaceful music to keep a cool head.

  • Know how safe airplanes are
  • Comparing the safety of travelling by aircraft to other dangers should keep you relaxed. Learn how a plane works from take off to landing if you can. A little reading up on the subject will go a long way.

  • Take classes
  • There are plenty of classes around to help you manage your tension, some free, whilst others come at a cost. If classes fail to do the trick, then you may want to consider hypnosis as a last resort to help overcome your fear.
